What is PeerCache?
PeerCache (PC) is an advanced peer-to-peer proxy caching solution designed to optimize P2P network traffic in a similar way that traditional web caches optimize HTTP traffic. However, instead of caching standard web content, PeerCache is specifically built to cache peer-to-peer protocol traffic such as FastTrack and other major P2P networks.
Unlike conventional web caching software, PeerCache was developed entirely from scratch using original code to ensure maximum efficiency, reliability, and scalability for high-volume peer-to-peer environments.
How Does PeerCache Work with P2P Applications?
PeerCache operates as a transparent proxy and caching layer between end users and peer-to-peer applications.
When users search for files, their P2P applications function normally. Once a download begins, the application attempts to locate the PeerCache system through DNS resolution. If a cache server is available, all download requests are routed through PeerCache instead of connecting directly to the original external source.
PeerCache then:
- Checks whether the requested content already exists in the local cache
- Delivers cached content instantly when available
- Downloads missing content from the original source if not yet cached
- Stores downloaded content locally for future requests
This process dramatically reduces redundant external bandwidth usage while improving download performance for users across the network.
Which P2P Protocols Does PeerCache Support?
PeerCache currently supports major peer-to-peer protocols including:
- FastTrack (used by KaZaA, iMesh, and Grokster)
- Overnet
- eDonkey
