Search Results: No Change for Users

When a user performs a search in a P2P client, there is no difference in search results whether PeerCache is present or not.

  • PeerCache does not participate in search queries
  • All search results come directly from the P2P network
  • The cache is only involved after a download is initiated

This ensures that users always see the same content availability as they would in a normal P2P environment.

Usernames in Downloads

The username displayed in the P2P client depends on the source of the download:

  • If the file is downloaded from a real peer user, both uploader and downloader usernames are shown normally.
  • If the file is served directly from the PeerCache system, the username field may appear blank, since the data is not coming from an individual peer.

Despite this difference in display, the download process remains seamless for the user.

Instant Messaging and Peer Features

When a file is delivered from PeerCache rather than a real user:

  • Instant messaging features are not available
  • “Find more from same user” functionality does not work

This is because PeerCache acts as a data source rather than a real P2P participant.

In some cases (such as certain KaZaA/Altnet scenarios), similar limitations may already exist within the P2P system itself.

Participation Level (PL) Behavior

PeerCache does not alter the logic of participation levels beyond normal download behavior:

  • If downloading from a real peer:
    • Downloader PL decreases
    • Uploader PL increases
  • If downloading from PeerCache:
    • Only the downloader’s PL is affected (decreases)
    • No uploader PL changes occur (since no peer uploaded the file)

PeerCache itself is not part of the participation scoring system.

File Handling: Segments vs Complete Files

PeerCache operates at a segment-based level, meaning:

  • It stores and handles file fragments (segments), not just complete files
  • The system does not interpret file contents or structure
  • All data is treated as independent chunks for caching efficiency

A single file download may include:

  • PeerCache (cached segments)
  • Other P2P users (live sources)

In most cases, PeerCache improves download speed significantly because:

  • Cached data is delivered from a nearby local network
  • Local cache sources typically have higher available bandwidth

Can PeerCache Ever Be Slower?

Yes, in some scenarios:

However, such configurations are generally not aligned with the intended purpose of PeerCache.

Users may also disable cache usage in their P2P client, but this is not recommended, as it can significantly reduce download performance.

Compatibility with P2P Clients

PeerCache is not officially integrated into unauthorized P2P clients, but:

  • Clients using FastTrack 2.0 or later typically interact with PeerCache automatically
  • There is no incentive for clients to avoid cache usage, as it usually improves download speeds

Over time, P2P applications are expected to naturally support caching systems like PeerCache due to performance benefits.

Improving Your Download Experience

To benefit from PeerCache:

  • Use an ISP that supports PeerCache, or
  • Request your ISP to deploy PeerCache in their network infrastructure
